EGGS INCREASE THE BENEFITS OF VEGETABLES
Top your salad with an egg and increase the goodness absorbed from the vegetables. According to US research the amount of carotenoids (compounds that give fruit and veg their colour and act as powerful antioxidants) increased by up to nine-fold in people who added an egg to a salad than those who didn’t.
B VITAMINS SUPPORT BRAIN FUNCTION
The benefits of B vitamins for a healthy brain and nervous system are well known. A new study led by Professor David Smith from Oxford University now shows that when combined with omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil, B vitamins can slow down the brain shrinkage that is linked with cognitive impairment as we age. Regular exercise, a Mediterranean diet, and brain training can also help.
BERRIES CAN HELP WEIGHT MANAGEMENT
Got a sweet tooth and looking for something to satisfy it? A handful of berries could be the answer. Better still it could help you to lose weight. A recent study carried out at Loughborough University showed that snacking on strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries rather than a bar of chocolate or a pack of sweets reduces the amount eaten at the next meal.
In the study, those who ate sweets before their dinner ate a fifth more than those who snacked on berries with the same calorie count. The reason? Foods that take longer to eat are likely to keep you feeling fuller for longer.
