VITAMIN D AWARENESS WEEK
It’s vitamin D Awareness Week from October 24th – 30th Now that the sun is lower in the sky, or some days non-existent, it is not strong enough to stimulate enough vitamin D production via the skin. This is especially important as a recent study from Public Health England highlighted that 23% of adults aged 19-64 years, and 22% of children aged 11-18 have low blood levels of this vital vitamin, essential for strong bones and teeth as well as immunity. The advice is to take a supplement of at least 10 mcg of vitamin D every day, especially during autumn and winter where levels of sunshine are at their lowest.
OMEGA 3’S FOUND TO IMPROVE MEMORY
Always forgetting things? A daily dose of omega-3 could help to sharpen things up. A recent study of more than 1,100 women over eight years showed that those with higher intakes of omega-3’s had larger brains with greater volume in the hippocampus – the part of the brain linked with memory. What’s more, in cognitive tests, adults aged over 55 years who took 900mg of omega-3 every day improved their memory scores after 24 weeks.
