Q & A: How to minimise the risk of catching a cold

“Which are the best supplements to take to reduce the risk of catching a cold or virus?”

Medical herbalist Gabriella Clarke answers.

We tend to associate colds and viruses with winter, when the temperature drops and our natural defences are lower. But bugs can hit at any time, running rife through playgrounds and offices. Thankfully there are ways we can arm ourselves as much as possible in preparation to fight off these viruses.

Here are some of the main supplements that can help support our immune systems all year round.

VITAMIN D

This essential vitamin plays many roles in our health, especially in keeping our immune system healthy. Sunshine is the best source of vitamin D but in the northern hemisphere, we are deprived of this vitamin in the winter months. As most people are deficient in this essential nutrient, a supplement is recommended. Taking around 10mcg daily is appropriate for most adults in the UK.

VITAMIN C

This vitamin has an important role to play in the health of our immune system. If you eat lots of fruit and veg you should hopefully be getting enough but this vitamin is easily depleted by environmental factors, stress, smoking and alcohol consumption. Including a supplement of 500mg daily is recommended.

ECHINACEA

This really is the herb for immune health. Research has shown that Echinacea not only helps to prevent catching viruses but can also reduce their duration and severity if you have caught one.

ZINC

This is the best mineral for preventing and fighting against viral infections as it plays a key role in the body’s immune system. 15mg a day is recommended. Try to take zinc after food to increase its absorption.
